A: Let’s compare the Kodiak Canvas 6010 and 6051 tents: 1. Kodiak Canvas 6010 (10x10 ft. Deluxe): The 6010 is the deluxe version of the 6-person tent. It measures 10x10 feet. Key features: 4 windows for ventilation (compared to 2 in the 6051). 2 doors (front and back). Includes an additional gear loft. Made from durable, watertight, breathable 100% cotton duck canvas. Sturdy Flex-Bow frame with tempered spring steel rods and galvanized steel tubing. 2. Kodiak Canvas 6051 (10x10 ft. Basic): The 6051 is the basic version of the same 6-person tent. It also measures 10x10 feet. Key features: 2 windows (front and back). 1 door (front). No additional gear loft. Same durable canvas construction as the 6010. 3. Q: What is the size of this tent when it is rolled up in the bag? Does the deluxe compress down to the same size?

A: The deluxe does compress down to the same size as the basic. It is a little bit subjective to say exactly what the dimensions are once it is rolled up since it can be rolled up quite tight or very loose-the bag cinches and straps to assist with that. I would say that it is generally about 30 inches wide by about 18 inches in diameter rolled up.

Q: What is the tarp option offered with this tent?

A: It is a 10 mil poly ground tarp that is designed to go underneath your tents-if you choose. It is not required, but it makes cleaning up the bottom of your and easier if you are camping in a dirty area.

A: I'm not 100% sure I understand your question. 10 x 10 basic does not have any side vents, but the 10 x 10 deluxe does. That would be model 6010. The tents have an off-white roof, beige sides and front, and the area around the doors is olive. Feel free to contact us with any other questions.

A: If the tent is covered under warranty you would simply contact the manufacturer. They may require some photographs of the issue. Once it is determined it is covered under warranty they are most likely to send out the parts needed-whether it's a pole, or the whole tent body etc.

Q: Do I have to season this tent even if I know it won't rain?

A: Many customers take this out camping without seasoning it by spraying it with water. In 99% of those cases they do just fine. However, there is the rare case where a tent leaks water, because it was not seasoned originally. For some reason when it gets wet the first time there is a reaction that causes the fibers to shrink into their permanent place. Those rare customers that do get wet-in most of those cases once the tent dries out it is now 100% waterproof. I would recommend setting it up in your yard and spraying it down with water if for no other reason but to make sure that you are going to have a flawless camping experience without any hiccups.

Q: Can I remove the awning if I don't want to set it up?

A: Fortunately or unfortunately this awning is sewn onto the tent. It cannot be removed, but it does not need to be set up each time you go camping. It is sewn onto the tent on one end and simply rolls up if you decide not to use it. You simply roll it up and then there are attachment cinches at the joint where it rolls up. If you get rained on and you leave it rolled up, please keep in mind that your tent maybe try in a few hours, but you will need to unroll this to let it dry properly and to prevent any mold or mildew if you store it wet.

Q: When I pound in the stakes should I use a hammer or a rubber mallet or does it matter?

A: Always use a rubber mallet just to be safe. I hammer can work in most cases, but the problem you might run into is either damaging the stake (and that is tough because these are very heavy duty) or you can damage the loop you are trying to stake down. Some customers will be pounding on the stake-miss it slightly-entered the scene where the loop attaches to the tent. So, make sure you are careful and accurate and to be safe use a rubber mallet.

Q: Can I put my dogs in this tent or is it not suitable for animals?

A: Many customers bring pets along for the camping trips. Please note that this tent is not pet proof. Sharp claws, sharp teeth, and rambunctious pets can be like a bull in a china shop. Having said that, you know your animal best. Will your dog claw the screen or have an accident? Possibly. You know best what their limitations and how to manage her own expectations when it comes to camping with your little pets. On a side note: many customers with pets will elect to purchase the cabin style tent with the deluxe awning. The reason? The deluxe awning also has wall enclosures, but there is no floor. If your pet has an accident it's not nearly as big of an ordeal as it would be inside the tent. Have you been camping with your parents? A: They are heavy-duty steel. If they were backpacking tents maybe we'd make them with a lighter aluminum, but these are steel and heavy grade to last a lifetime (hence the Lifetime warranty) and much, much, stronger than their aluminum counterparts.

A: This holds up exceptionally well in the sun. Compared to other tent materials (especially nylon tents) there is no comparison. Canvas by virtue of it's cotton make will provide many years (and if taken care of - decades) of camping memories.

Q: Does this come out-of-the-box waterproof or do I need to spray it with some type of chemical?

A: This comes out-of-the-box having been preached treated with the waterproofing hydra-shield technology. However, when we say that the tent needs to be "seasoned" we are only referring to the need to spray it down with water when you set it up for the first time. It might seem pointless as you will notice the water simply roll off of the tent. But, rest assured it is working. As the tent begins to dry you will notice that the fibers will shrink only slightly making what might have been a 99.99% waterproof tent 100%. Please do not spray it with any type of chemical. Years down the road if you notice that (and this depends on how often you use the tent whether it is weeks or days each year) it needs to be retreated with a canvas waterproofing tent spray.

Q: We have some pretty rough Boy Scouts. Will this work for them or do I need something bigger?

A: Yes, but "be prepared"! Boy scouts for the most part take great care of their camping equipment. I have volunteered for our local scout troop to take care of the tents and repair them when necessary. I have received tents back soaking wet, filled with dirt, taffy stuck to the interior wall, pocket knife slits in the floor, and more. Fortunately, these hold up so well that when I am done spraying them off (and spraying the inside with water in extreme cases) they look beautiful and ready for the next camp out. Your best bet is to give them responsibility when it comes to maintaining them and they'll be more careful to not "drop" their pocket knife and puncture the floor.

Q: What is the floor made of? How do I clean after and other materials that get tracked in?

A: The floor is made of PVC-polyvinyl. Customers are almost always impressed when the set this up for the first time to realize that the floor is not a cheap imitation of a ground tarp. They are very durable and very high quality. You'll notice that they have a slight texture and a rubbery feeling. This is intentional as it makes the camping experience more pleasant when you are walking in the tent and you cannot hear crunching with every footstep. It's silent, in other words. Cleaning it off is very simple-never use abrasive rags or sponges. It's best simply to use a wet rag and possibly let the stain soak. It can actually be mopped if it gets dirty enough. Your spending a significant amount of money on the tent son guessing you're probably going to take very good care of it and will not run into this issue. However, if you lend it out this advice might come in handy :-)

Q: It says that the floor is made out of polyvinyl or PVC. Does that mean it will break if it gets cold war what is the material exactly?

A: The polyvinyl material is very flexible and will not become brittle in freezing temperatures. It feels like rubber, but it is so thick it is not something you can simply grab with your hands and stretch around. It is the real deal. The only instances I have heard were the floor has been damaged his work customer has dropped the knife, unusually sharp rocks (without a protective ground tarp), and other very unusual circumstances.

Q: I am part of the Mountain Man rendezvous group and we often mark up our tents with symbols and sayings and drawings. Can I do that to this canvas?

A: Often people will write their family name or something to make sure that it doesn't get mixed up with other people's tents. However, we don't recommend painting it or excessive drawings simply because the chemicals in the paint or markers can damage the material or at least damage the waterproofing technology. The canvas we use is considered to be "dry treated" as opposed to some Tipi and wall tents that are "wet treated" where they have a waxy feeling and are difficult to bend in the cold weather.

Q: How does the awning hold up to wind and rain?

A: The awning holds up very well in almost every condition. Wind would be the exception. When the wind is blowing excessively it's a good idea to roll it up or take it off the stakes. The tent can hold up to some crazy wind, but the awning might simply come off of the tent pole spikes-nothing to be too concerned about. In other words, it would be very difficult for damage to occur due to wind, but it could take the awning off of its poles to flap around. It holds up very well to rain. Just make sure that you place it such that the water can run off one side and not create a massive puddle to pool in the center of the awning as it will weigh down the tent until it spills over.

Q: How warm would you say this tent is and do you recommend bringing a heater for colder temperatures?

A: Canvas does breath a bit, but if you have the windows and doors closed up, it can get pretty warm during the summer months. If heat is a problem, you can either open up both windows on the front and back of the tent to get some cross-ventilation; or, you can look at getting the 6010 Kodiak tent, which has 2 additional windows for more ventilation. This tent is not designed to have a heater in it as canvas is flammable and there is not a place in the tent design to let off the exhaust from your heating source.

A: There are many different kinds sizes in cots. In fact, there are some bunk bed style cots as well. This tent can accommodate four of the average cost sizes very comfortably. It can also fit a queen-size mattress and then another cotton or two.

Q: What is the difference between this 6051 and the other tent models 6010 and 6011vx?

A: The Model 6051 is considered the basic model. The weight of the canvas on the walls, floor, and roof are the same between each of these tents. In other words, the fundamentals are the same. The model 6010 is a step up because it includes four windows instead of two, includes a gear loft as opposed to no loft, includes a cinch and strap carrying back as opposed to a duffel-style bag, and includes air flow vents near the roof as opposed to no air flow vents. The model number 6011VX includes all of those options as well, but has a total of six windows. That is, 6011VX has the most features. It has everything that the model 6010 has, but also has two more windows (a total of 6). Do I really need this season? Treating the tent and seasoning the tent are two different processes. This tent is already treated with an above-industry waterproofing system. On the other hand, seasoning the tent refers to spraying it lightly with water once it has been set up for the first time. The first time dries the fibers so they will shrink and tighten to make it a 100% waterproofed tent. Some customers do not season the tent and they still don't get water inside. It is just an extra step /precaution to make sure you have a great camping experience while keeping dry.

A: The manufacturer does not recommend using any combustible heat source for liability reasons. A wood burning stove requires a flu and any modifications to the tent void the warranty.

We put it up on the backyard. All materials are durable and the seems were secure. We hosed it down to season it and were impressed with how dry the inside was despite the water load on the outside. The only complaint would be (and this is common to many tents) is how the water would puddle on the canopy. I wish they would put an arch to the canopy to avoid this.

I set up the tent just in time for rain and sure enough its water proof. I camped out a few days ago with it and its wind proof also. Very roomy inside and very quick to set up. A great tent overall.

Terrific!
I bought this tent primarily for camping out in the desert. Out there, we have to deal with 20-30 MPH winds and a lot of really fine dust. I have to say this tent performed much better than I thought. It barely budged during the 40 MPH gusts that we had. The stakes were of very high quality and none of them bent as I hammered them into very hard packed ground. And best of all, NO DUST GOT IN THE TENT!!!! The only dust that got in was on the bottom of our feet. Having a door on both sides helped a lot with this as we were able to open the side that did not face the wind. The bottom of the tent is amazing, but I would (and am planning to) by the tarp for the tent. Just to protect it. I wish it had some extra tie downs on the sides of the outside of the tent. But it apparently didn't need any. I bought the Basic one. Maybe the Deluxe has some?

Wonderful Tent!
We are a family of 4 with the two kids at 8 and 3 years old. This tent is PERFECT for us! I'm glad we went with this one instead of the deluxe, not only because this one has more value, but temperature-wise, this suited us best. During the day when it's hot, we're usually out hiking or doing our outdoors activity. We leave the tent with the two windows open and the ventilation works fine. At night, we come back and the temperatures drop. It's then that we need the extra warmth and this tent is superb in that regard. We've taken it camping three times now and here are a few things I've noticed: 1. I am a 5' tall woman who weighs 110 pounds. I cannot put this thing together by myself. Lifting the top up and then propping it up with a pole is too much for me. But my husband is able to do it by himself. 2. I know people have complained that it's heavy but it does come in two parts. I am able to carry it fine. It's the lifting over my head part that is tricky. 3. Even though we got the basic ones, I still love all the features that come with it - the two side pockets are ample and hole a lot of stuff - the window and door ties are perfect. And of course the little awning is very sweet and useful to hangout under. 4. Fits the four of us very nicely. I can't imagine how anyone could stuff 6 people in there. 5. Love that we can stand up inside it. Overall, it's a little home away from home. I know it's expensive but I've ready how the other tents have flame retardants on them that are harmful if inhaled. I liked that Kodiak has this canvas alternative that is so well made and thought out. Can't imagine ever using anything else now.

I have a couple of these tents and they are great. Very good quality and heavy duty including the zippers.
