12x16 Cabin Lodge Tent SR (Stove Ready)
The 12x16 Kodiak Canvas Cabin Lodge Stove Ready (SR) tent is the largest of our Cabin Lodge Tent series. It is made with high performance, Hydra-Shield™, 100% cotton duck canvas. The tight weave and silicone finish make this canvas watertight yet breathable, minimizing condensation and mugginess that are common with synthetic tents. The sewn-in floor is a tough 13.5 oz vinyl with welded seams, that keeps water out. The tall ceiling (7.5 ft. at peak) and vertical wall design (4 ft. at sides) provide a roomy interior with stand-up, walk-around comfort. There are 2 large doors at each end of this huge tent - you don't have to crouch to get through them! Nine large windows provide openness, and excellent ventilation. Windows can be opened and closed from inside the tent, and feature no-see-um, screen mesh that keeps the smallest bugs out. A covered storm window and vents can be opened to circulate outside air, even when rainy. The doors and windows feature top-rated YKK zippers. This design, boasting a frame with 1-inch, galvanized, steel tubing, will hold up to strong winds and even snow loads. A stove jack allows for use of a wood burning stove to keep you warm when temperatures drop. When using the tent without a stove, just zip the stove jack cover closed. The 8x8 ft. enclosed awning accessory (model 1672, sold separately) increases the usable space of your tent, and provides a nice area to get out of the weather or store extra gear and wood. These enclosed awning accessories can be added to either or both ends of this tent. A zippered storage bag and hefty, 12-inch, steel tent stakes are included. Requires two adults for setup. Limited lifetime warranty.

Q:
CharlieReally enjoy your reviews. My question is: Is this tent suitable to be left up long term? I have a piece of land that I would love to put this tent on a raised platform for long time. Are there an additional rain fly available? I am interested in the 12x16 with one add on.Thanks

A:
Great question. Many people leave these up for months at a time. Some companies rent them out as glamping tents. Officially, they are designed for camping so the warranty won't cover extended use. The biggest threat is constant moisture, humidity, and rot. That can happen if it's set-up in an area where it doesn't dry out daily, but is just constantly wet, especially near the bottom where the floor and wall seam meet. If it is surrounded by grass or shrubbery that doesn't allow that to dry it will eventually rot. So, with that in mind, some people (especially businesses renting them out) leave them up for months at a time and replace them as needed. We had some customers in Hawaii that would put a canopy over them to protect it from long-term uv ray damage and they would often get a full year out of them. All the elements, but especially moisture, factor into how long it would last as a long-term shelter which, again, isn't covered under the warranty.

Q:
So if we place the tent on a raised platform with airspace of say 12 inches between bottom of framing and the ground - will that give enough air flow to cut down on moisture? Also - how often should we rewater proof the outside and what is the preferred product to use?
Asked by:
Daniel Strobridge
- 6/1/2024
A:
You shouldn't have to rewaterproof it for years and years. If you are leaving it out for extended use periods (not recommended) you may have to retreat it yearly. Having the tent on a raised platform should be good for minimizing moisture, but different climates can make it rot if it's constantly wet and touching shrubbery and never seeing sunlight - that's for any canvas product. It sounds like you've got a good setup though minimzing moisture and allowing it to dry. Kiwi Camp Dry non-silicone based is what we recommend.

Q:
Hello. I was interested in the lag stakes by holdia as well as the 12x16 tent. The review for the stakes was several months ago. Do you still recommend them? If so, how many stakes are needed for the 12x16 tent? Thanks.
Asked by:
Al
- 6/1/2024
A:
Great question. The lag stakes are very effective and people rarely use the lag stakes on every stake-down point. There are 16 stakes with this tent, but using 16 lag stakes is probably overkill and expensive. I would recommend at least 8 to spread them out.

Q:
I am going to purchase this tent and use it on a tent platform during deer season. I cannot find a footprint diagram. the tent platform will be 16' wide and 40' long. The tent will be tied down to the platform itself. I plan to tie the guy wires to eyebolts mounted through the platform and using ratchet straps through the stake eyelets to the eyebolts also. The tent poles will be placed in round post surface mounts. Can this tent be set up in this manner? Is there a better way to stake the tent down than the ratchet straps? Is the ground tarp still necessary when using the tent platform?

A:
Yes, The tent can be set up this way, and many customers will use these for extended use, though keep in mind this will reduce the lifetime of the tent.If you are using your tent for extended use situations, periods of continuous use for three weeks or greater, there are some precautions you should be aware of in order to maximize the life of your tent.1) Canvas Rot: This occurs when the canvas at the bottom of the tent is in constant contact with moist ground. The canvas never dries out and eventually will begin to rot or decay in the areas of contact. Even if there is no precipitation, this can be caused by moisture from dew. Prevention: For extend use, make sure the tent is placed in an area that is well drained and dry. It could be placed on sand, gravel, or a slated wooden platform. Extended use on grassy areas or moist soil should be avoided.2) Mildew: Is more prone to grow in humid climates in dark or shady areas. Prevention: Opening the tent up daily and letting it air out. When possible, place the tent in an area where it can receive a couple hours of direct sunlight a day.3) UV damage. While your Kodiak Canvas tent is much less susceptible to UV deterioration than many synthetic fabrics, over time it will eventually degrade the canvas. Life expectancy in full sunlight should exceed one year of continuous use. Possibly much more than a yearthere are many factors. Prevention: Placing your tent an area where it receives full sunlight for only a few hours a day is best, and will prolong its useful life.
